Awards Ceremony for the Art & Essay Contest for high school students with the theme “The Art of Living Together” co-organized by IDI Toronto and Durham District School Board was held on 3rd of May at Ajax Convention Centre.

An audience of distinguished guests have gathered to recognize the success of the award recipients, whose awards were presented by prominent figures of the community:

ART CATEGORY
First Place:  Hajra Waheed, Grade 9, Pickering High School, award presented by MPP Joe Dickson
Second Place:  Kaitlyn Verdonk, Grade 12, Dunbarton High School, award presented by Mayor Dave Ryan
Third Place: Mary Kehoe, Grade 12, Pine Ridge Secondary School, award presented by Shashi Bhatia

ESSAY CATEGORY
First Place: Jennie Long, Grade 11, Henry Street High School, award presented by Mayor Steve Parish
Second Place: Akuah Frempong, Grade 12, J.C. Richardson Collegiate, award presented by Chief Mike Ewles
Third Place: Stephen Hickey, Grade 11, Grove School, award presented by Wanda Secord, Exec. Dir. of Durham CAS

During the ceremony, as a surprise to the award recipients, upon the suggestion of Roger Anderson, Chair and CEO of Region of Durham, the winners were also awarded with a helicopter ride by Durham Regional Police. MPP Tracy MacCharles , MPP Jonh O’Toole, several councillors, school board trustees and community leaders were also among the gusts.
