Public Heroes Awards Ceremony 2013 took take place on May 1st, 2013, 7pm at Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre. Around 200 guests enjoyed a marvelous night, where they recognized the important work done by the Police, Fire and EMS. The night started with a warm reception followed by the entry of head table guests to the hall accompanied by ceremonial units, colour guards and pipers from Toronto Police, Fire and EMS.
Dwight Drummond did a perfect job as the host of the evening, where M. Fatih Yegul from IDI Toronto opened the stage with a welcome speech. Guests made new friends and had a chance to taste unique tastes of Turkish cuisine during the dinner. The speech by Hilal Koseturk, a grade 6 student from Nile Academy, reflected how our police, fire and EMS officers did matter to youngsters. Hon. Madeleine Meilleur, minister of Community Safety and Correctional Services, offered a keynote address, which was followed by the awards ceremony, where Mike Manzke & Sharon Kent from Toronto Police, Mike Wood from Toronto Fire and Michael Roffey from Toronto EMS received their awards from Dr. Alok Mukharjee, chair of Toronto Police Services Boards, MPP Monte Kwinter, and MPP Michael Prue.
Charities chosen by the award recipients, Red Door Family Shelter, Camp Bucko and Jessie’s Centre received a “Pizza for a year” gift, which was presented by Pizza Pizza VP Sebastian Fuschini.
Dave Ralph, who wrapped up the night with a final remarks also presented an Ebru (water marbling) artwork to MC Dwight Drummond. Dave Ralph encouraged the guests to nominate more officers next year to make the life a little harder for the members of the selection committee.
